Looking back to 2020, ahead to 2021.

9 Jan

Well, friends,

What an incredible and intense year 2020 was. I’m grateful for it and my circumstances in many ways, but I’m also looking forward to this year and what it will bring.

I’m sure for many of you, your thoughts and feelings are running wild, even as your actions are still mostly constrained to the home. But fears of political unrest, excitement (and dread!) about vaccines, about continuing conflicts over masks, about the environment, about neoliberal governments and fascist governments, about resources, about your job, and more, are all showing up. So what to do?

I’m trying my best to see into all of this and offer some grounding and love and assistance in navigating the year that’s unfolding.

To that end, I’ve compiled a spotify playlist of my most notable recent podcast appearances. To access the playlist, just click here or search for “Conner Habib guides for 2021” on your spotify app.

The conversations include the latest episode of my own podcast, which is spookily entitled “The Year of the Revelation of the Blood” (don’t worry, it’s good spooky!) in which I discuss the coming year from an esoteric Christian perspective.

But the playlist also includes:

• My appearance on internationally-renowned fitness and health professional Paul Chek’s podcast, Living 4D, where I talk about sexuality and God.

• My conversation and audience Q&A with Gordon White on Rune Soup (there’s also video available here) about the challenges of changing from a materialistic to a spiritual worldview in 2021 and why that is absolutely needed.

• My discussion about the war on sex and dissolving old world views with media analyst Doug Rushkoff on his consistently excellent podcast, Team Human.

My long chat with Duncan Trussell – in which I lead him through a bunch of spiritual exercises, and he calls me a “living psychedelic substance” – about the ongoing changes in human consciousness.

Want to be in conversation with me and other patreon patrons about this year, how to achieve your goals amidst the order (AKA “chaos”) and to discuss how to make it a great year instead of an oh-shit-how-am-I-going-to-manage one? Join us for the Against Everyone Salon on the new year.
Sign up for or boost your pledge to the Against Everyone Salon tier, which is $10/month. To do that, go here, and support at the $10 level or higher.

Anyway, dear friends, it’s going to be a great year for all you who can stay steady and get your sea legs for the journey across this year long oceanic gulf of what came before and what will be in the future!

Friends,
In the absolute rush of the news cycle, you may feel claustrophobic, scared, anxious. And you may be forgetting about Alejandro Jodorowksy’s wise words about magic: “Magic in Thought: EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE.”

So now is a time for possibility, not limits. To that end, I invited one of the most expansive and perceptive thinkers I know, author, magician, and Rune Soup host, Gordon White, on to the show. Gordon’s voice is essential in this time, not only because he is a systems thinker, but because he is a systems thinker who considers the non-physical dimension. Gordon and I discuss the potential of this moment, as well as its dangers.

We also talk about the spiritual currents in, informing, and causing some of the events in our moment. And we turn our attention to a potent question for our time: What are spirits?

As Gordon puts it in a non-Godfather voice, coronavirus offers an opportunity for a better world, and the difficulties ahead make it the “opportunity one you can’t refuse.”

Let’s take it up, friends. Let’s start here.
Speaking of the non-physical dimension, this episode is the first one I’ve recorded remotely. It made me feel uncomfortable, but I think we pulled it off!

On this episode

  • What the actual fuck is actually is happening here now
  • The importance of the ground beneath your feet and what’s immediately outside your door
  • Why we need to stop fearing death
  • Why the black death is the pandemic comparison we need
  • Choosing desire in this moment
  • The difference between public conversations and social media conversations
  • The connection between medicine and materialism
  • Angels, and “Be not afraid” as your mantra.
  • How the panic was always here, anyway
  • Why we need to create a new, better, world and simultaneously resist evil
  • What spirts are, anyway – breath? Rivers? Consciousness?
  • Whether or not Gordon and I see spirits
  • Human beings as addresses for spirits
  • Getting in touch with the feeling of “holy”
  • Ghost ships near Malaysia
  • Why the spirit world is not behind a veil
  • On the other hand, why there is a spirit that is a veil

SHOW NOTES

• For Gordon’s 2020 astrology video with Austin Coppick, go here. And for my 2020 episode of Rune Soup with Gordon, go here.

• Gordon is very interested in Armstrong economics. They’re dirty, but very interesting, and, I think, present profound conclusions and a profound picture.

• Rudolf Steiner’s book, The Mission of the Archangel Michael, the Revelation of the Secrets of Man’s Being is good reading for this moment. You can also find an audio version here.

• Interested in the art of Andrew Wyeth? It’s beautiful.

The Shock Doctrine is a book and term from Naomi Klein.

• Here are the twitter TOS changes, which seem to be backed-off from and have a sort of watery enforcement.

• Here’s a bit on Neville Godard’s First Principle, “Be still and know that I am God.”

• The Žižek quote is, “The function of ideology is not to offer us a point of escape from our reality but to offer us the social reality itself as an escape.”

• Here’s a bit on my dear dead friend Jake.

• The Walter Benjamin quote: ” The same threat hangs over both: that of becoming a tool of the ruling classes. In every era the attempt must be made anew to wrest tradition away from a conformism that is about to overpower it. The Messiah comes not only as the redeemer, he comes as the subduer of Antichrist.”

• Want to hear more about and with Lynn Margulis? Here’s the last conversation recorded before her death. It’s with me, on AEWCH 91.

• The book Gordon mentions that influenced Gary Lachman, is The Master And His Emmissary, by Iain McGilchrist.

• “There exists nothing other than the spiritual world. What we call the sensory world is the evil in the spiritual world, and what we call evil is only a necessary moment in our eternal development.” – Kafka

• “Breathe deep, seek peace.” – Dinotopia

Until next week, friends!

How To Be An Occult Activist – I’m on the latest episode of Rune Soup!

6 Jul

Gordon White (who you might remember from episode 4 of AEWCH) and I talk about all sorts of stuff, but mainly, what activism infused by real spirituality and occult knowledge looks like.

We talk

  • the spirituality of identity politics
  • why the will is bad for magic
  • Susan Sarandon
  • desire v materialism
  • how to include going backwards into activism and spirituality

It starts off a little slow and then builds and builds and builds. Until it becomes, in full, one of the best podcast appearances I’ve ever done.

You can watch/listen via YouTube above or go to the Rune Soup site to download or connect to audio.

Alex, author of Why Science Is Wrong…about Almost Everythingis best known as host of the mighty Skeptiko podcast, which has hundreds of episodes up, chronicling his journey from skeptic to full-on consciousness explorer. It’s an exhilarating progression, as Alex talks to scientists, mystics, conspiracy theorist, historians, and more. I encourage you to listen to the episodes in sequence. Alex is, in some ways, even more open and exposed than me, displaying all his misfires and new insights, his frustrations and his fascinations.
IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT
  • Time management as occultism
  • My first memory was of the spiritual world
  • How Alex decided to start a podcast and why you should too
  • The power of self-doubt, and how to make sure doubt doesn’t overwhelm you
  • Why every discipline should seek to be obsolete

Making this show my main gig outside of writing is a huge dream for me – so please support the show AND get cool stuff by donating as little as a dollar/month here. Thank you!

Good Chaos

Caitlin Doughty, Yours Truly, Gordon White

My event in LA with Gordon White, Chaotic Good: Why We Need the Occult Now (More Than Ever), was a big success on many levels.
It sold out, so that was a pretty great marker of its success, financially. But also, it was a marker of the necessity of and longing for occult-related events.

CG2

La société du spectacle

Beyond those basic levels, it was intense. The audience members were all just…vibing. There were powerful occultists there (Poke Runyon sat in the front row, jeez), and beginners, and skeptics (including our amazing moderator, Caitlin Doughty), and political folks and artists. Everyone was just listening, taking it all in, and during the Q&A expressing their own version or whatever resonated. It was a spell against loneliness if nothing else. Whatever happened content-wise, I knew that we’d done a good thing together in just being with each other, in gathering all these weirdos who have imaginations that are big enough to take on reality itself.

Byron Katie says “We talk to figure out what we want to say.” I agree. And sometimes, we even say what we want to say and want what we want. When I give public talks, sometimes ideas come from me that I didn’t know were there. What I want to say just appears.

And the work of refining a thought so that others can hear it and understand it is an act of agility, so I find myself (especially in Q&A) turning to my heart as I speak. What will I say that is understandable here? What will connect these people – who are giving me the honor of their silence and the negative space of their hearing – to this idea and to me?

It makes me a better person to speak publicly and answer questions, because I have to imagine what other people are like, what they feel, and what they think. Even though I’m speaking, we’re inhabiting each other.

CG4

“I drink of my sisters and I ask for the ability to not hate those who hate me. Especially racist pieces of bleach-blonde shit like Laura Lizzie.”

Rachel True (from The Craft!) gave tarot readings, and tarot, beyond its more obvious powers, commands a listening-to. When you get a reading, you listen in a different way. The tarot has a conversation with your thoughts, and your embedded-ness in time.

Of course, the conversations after I got off the stage had their own lives too. One-on-one conversation is one of our most powerful tools. I always say conversation and sex are the same order of being: They are free; they can go in any direction; they may be happy or unhappy or exciting or boring; whatever the outcome, it doesn’t mean you won’t engage again with the same person; they’re different from person to person, and more. Chaotic good.

It reminds me of Rudolf Steiner’s stirring comment that “Conversation is the new Eucharist.” Body and blood and sacrament.

Sit with that, if you want. Let it ring out in you. Remember when you speak to another person, you’re encountering a completely unique nexus of universal forces.

Gordon talks about a bit of this on the new episode of Rune Soup, which you can/shouldlisten to here.

If you couldn’t attend the event not to worry, the entire thing is being transcribed into an ebook with new intros by Gordon and I.

Hopefully the book will be not only interesting, but make you feel like you’re at the event, in conversation.

A big part of my conversation now is happening through my Patreon page, which is linked to my new web series. Please do sign up on Patreon to support my work and livelihood, and to interact with me. Thank you, new pioneers.

First, I have an event Saturday, July 8, with Gordon White (author of The Chaos Protocols and Star.Ships) in LA! It’s an evening of in-depth discussion and exploration of why we urgently need the occult to guide us through our world called CHAOTIC GOOD: WHY THE OCCULT MATTERS NOW (MORE THAN EVER). You can buy tickets HERE.

The discussion is moderate by special guest mortician, bestselling author Caitlin Doughty, and features tarot readings by everyone’s favorite witch from The Craft, the brilliant and intuitive Rachel True. The event is followed by a Q&A.

We’ll explore:

  • How the occult intersects with today’s politics, sexuality, science, and art.
  • The use of occult worldviews by and against the political milieu
  • Wealth, money, career and magic in an unpredictable economy.
  • Working with the spirits of place.
  • Which wheels Jesus takes, which ones you have to take, and why the fuck you’d want God as your co-pilot instead of just letting Him fly the plane himself.
  • Managing despair, anxiety and depression in uncertain times.
  • Today’s magical revival.

Books by Gordon, Conner, and Caitlin, as well as other esoterica, will be provided by the best bookshop in Los Angeles, the amazing Skylight Books. Tickets are almost sold out, so get yours ASAP.

Screen Shot 2017-06-04 at 8.26.37 PMI have new equipment on the way for my web series, so: In the lull between episodes, I’ve decided to post this audio only bonus episode of Against Everyone with Conner Habib, in which I read and talk about my essay “If You Ever Did Write Anything About Me, Id Want It To Be About Love.”

The essay details a painful relationship I was in that is always re-evoked for me around July 4.

The episode is NOT available via YouTube like the rest of the show, but there’s an easy workaround – just go to my Patreon page by clicking here, and you can listen or download the audio as an MP3.

Conner and Gordon White on Grimerica talking all that weird stuff.

26 Mar

dhChaos Protocols and Star.ShipsStar.Ships author + Rune Soup host, Gordon White, and I are getting our weird lives and magickal destinies more and more intertwined.

Here we are on the excellent Grimerica podcast, talking all sorts of weird shit.

  • Why we’re in a spiritual Renaissance.
  • What’s up with all that Pizzagate stuff?
  • What’s the matter with materialism?
  • How you can be an occultist by just looking around the room.
  • Why going to a haunted house with a Ouija Board would be the best scary idea you might ever have.

And more! Gordon and I have talked before, of course, but it was nice talking on someone else’s podcast – where we were both interrupted with questions, concerns, and challenges by the Grimerica guys, who are both well-meaning and conspiracy-minded. They’re great. Give it a go (interview starts at 49.05)!

If you’re interested in my past appearances on Grimerica, here’s me on solo; and me in conversation with the Grimerica guys and Alex Tsakiris, host of the Skeptiko podcast. (Oh, and if that’s not enough links for you, the conversation I had with Alex about science on this very blog, dear reader!)

Chaos Magician + Renegade Anthroposophist = Podcast

5 Jan

IMG_4011Happy to announce I’m the first guest of 2017 on one of my favorite podcasts, Rune Soup, hosted by author and occultist, Gordon White. (If you want to skip past this stuff, just scroll down to the podcast.)

I found Gordon through a series of synchronicities: Last year, I spoke to an occulty friend of mine in San Francisco after three years of not communicating (nothing bad, we just sort of dropped out of each other’s lives). “Conner, you’ve got to read this book called The Chaos Protocols! It’s a completely new take on the economic climate and how to engage with money and the world we live in now,” he said. Or something to that effect.

I trust my friend’s taste, but to be honest, I did what I often do when people recommend stuff to me – I  thought, “Sure, sure. Another magick book. I’ll get to it in 2052.”

Later that day, I turned on a podcast that I love and am often happily frustrated by, Skeptiko, hosted by Alex Tsakiris (you may remember my conversation about scientific knowledge with Alex from December 2014). The guest? None other than Gordon White. It was a great interview.

Okay, okay, I’ll look this guy up. When I checked twitter, I saw that we followed each other. Huh? I had no memory of following him, nor of him following me. He must have just tweeted something awesome and I instinctively hit the Follow button. A few months later, I’d read The Chaos Ptotocols (it’s excellent, as are his other books, Star.Ships and Pieces of Eight) appeared on Episode 24 of his podcast, Rune Soup (which is also the name of his excellent occult-meets-politics website), and was becoming fast friends with Gordon.

My second appearance is even better than the first, in my opinion. We talk about 2017, gwwhy you shouldn’t despair, what the state of the world can mean for us spiritually, why it’s important to decolonize our thoughts, the power of forgiveness, and more. It’s all part of my work this year to radiate empowerment to you, dear reader, dear viewer, dear friend. This includes my upcoming online course, Radical Undoing: Decolonize Your Mind with Sex, Science, the Occult, and Philosophy (sign up!); which I talk about on the podcast.

Let’s become the prisms through which inspiration, imagination, and creative engagement refract and illuminate.

Here’s the podcast! Enjoy!
