Friends,
One of the problems of with our view of the changing world, as well as of ourselves and our spiritual development, is that we delude ourselves into thinking we can somehow develop and yet stay the same.
The promise can retain all we have and grow and grow and grow is the promise of spiritual influencers, technocrat capitalists, population growth enthusiasts, and more.
In an attempt to counter this, we get the deprivation fantasies of leftists advocate the erosion of pleasure, ascetics romanticizing of wandering away from the world, and the violence of ego-driven neo-primitivism.
On this episode with teachers and author Lisa Romero, we ask how to develop and what to leave behind so that it can be transformed.
And we find direction from an unlikely source: the esoteric mysteries of Ireland.
Whether talking about St Patrick, Saint Brendan, the Otherworld, or the Hibernian initiation mysteries, we find that embedded in the Irish mysteries are words that have been waiting to be announced until this moment.
Lisa and I consider the ways in which Irish Saints and our connections to them can reveal something to us about our own paths – collectively but also as individuals, We mull over fascism and the ways in which we fuel fantasies of escape through violent echoes of the past.
So excited to share this episode with you.

This episode is being posted ahead of St Patrick’s day, and we consider what might happen if we use that day not merely to celebrate in a secular way, but to allow it to bring us into reflection on the saints and the mysteries.
It’s also ahead of two separate initiatives I wanted to tell you about. A course and a conference here in Ireland.
The first is Lisa’s courses on the esoteric mysteries of Easter.
“As we turn our attention towards the transformation needed for our greater freedom that the Easter mysteries are calling us towards, we may already be experiencing that 2025 is a remarkable year of change, and that we all fare better when we can consciously and willingly embrace the in-streaming cosmic shifts.”
We’re also both going to be at the Light in the Depths conference in April in Ballycastle, Ireland. I’ll be offering a lecture series across three days, along with Lisa Romero, Orland Bishop, and others. It’s at the Corrymeela Community, which was a key site for peacekeeping and conflict mediation during and after the Troubles in Ireland. Here’s a description:
Meeting the Mysteries to Face the Challenges of Our Times
For many of us, perhaps more than ever in our lives, the challenges of the world feel like they are closing in on us. In culture, in politics, and in economics we are caught in a whirl of activity and anxieties that have the potential to disorient us. Conflict in the Middle East, chaotic patterns in governance, police violence, housing crises, inflamed social and class division, the rise of surveillance, environmental degradation and more… How can we access the lessons of the Mysteries — particularly as expressed by Rudolf Steiner but also by other important figures — to create true strength in the present and help navigate the mapless territories of the future?
